About Sikhote-Alin Biosphere Reserve

Sikhote-Alin Biosphere Reserve, located in Primorsky Krai in the Russian Far East, encompasses a unique temperate forest ecosystem characterized by mixed coniferous and broadleaf forests on rugged mountain terrain. Covering an area of roughly 401,000 acres, this reserve protects a critical habitat for the endangered Amur tiger and Amur leopard, among other rare and endemic species such as the Siberian musk deer and Far Eastern black bear. Established in 1935 primarily to safeguard the region’s biodiversity, it was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1978 to promote conservation alongside scientific study and environmental education. The terrain features steep mountain ridges of the Sikhote-Alin range, deep river valleys, and rich wetlands, supporting a diverse assemblage of flora and fauna tailored to the monsoon-influenced temperate climate. Visitors to the reserve can explore guided eco-trails that reveal pristine forest landscapes, rare wildlife tracks, and culturally significant sites associated with indigenous peoples’ history. Although recreation is highly regulated to minimize human impact, the reserve offers wildlife viewing opportunities, particularly for large mammals, as well as photography and educational programs. The Siberian Tiger Museum, located nearby in the city of Vladivostok, complements visits by providing insight into the reserve’s key species and conservation efforts. Access to the reserve is restricted to protect its fragile environment, requiring permits and guided tours. Its remote and wild character appeals mainly to serious naturalists and conservationists seeking to experience one of the last remnants of temperate old-growth forest in Eurasia.
